Aidaz (born Amara Jean Dawson, June 4, 1992) is an African American country singer-songwriter known for blending classic country storytelling with soulful blues, roots Americana, and hints of gospel traditions. Raised in a small town outside Macon, Georgia, she grew up in a multigenerational household where music was both heritage and ritual — hymns on Sundays, blues records on vinyl, and her grandfather’s old Hank Williams cassettes on long truck rides.

Her nickname, Aidaz, came from her initials (A.J. Dawson) and a family joke about her writing songs "before she could even spell her own name."

Though country music was her first love, she often felt like an outsider in the genre. “I grew up loving the sound of twang, slide guitar, and dusty front porches — but I didn’t see anyone who looked like me doing it,” she once said in an interview. That challenge, she explained, pushed her to carve out her own lane.

At age 14, she began performing original songs at local farmer’s markets and open mic nights. She blended country storytelling with soulful vocals influenced by artists like Mavis Staples, Ray Charles, and Dolly Parton. Her song Holding on — written at 16 — would later become one of her signature ballads.

After studying literature and music theory at Spelman College in Atlanta, Aidaz moved to Nashville with $600, an old guitar, and a belief that country music had more room than people thought. She played writers’ rounds in East Nashville, slowly building a following for her emotionally layered songs about lineage, identity, and home.

In 2021, she released her breakthrough EP Backroads & Bloodlines, which received critical acclaim for its lyrical depth and fusion of genres. Her single “Cottonwood & Concrete” — a song about leaving and returning, belonging and becoming — went viral on TikTok and later charted on Americana radio.

Known for her warm stage presence, braid-adorned cowboy hat, and distinctive contralto voice, Aiadaz has been called “a bridge between the past and the future of country music.” She advocates for diversity in folk and country genres and frequently collaborates with both traditional country musicians and contemporary soul artists.

Today, Aidaz continues to tour, write, and record — crafting music that holds memory, heritage, and hope in the same breath.
